SPORTS SPORTS SPORTS.......THE GREAT GATSBY

F. Scott Fitzgerald's famed book, The Great Gatsby is full of symbolism that gives most little details in the novel special meaning. One of those symbols that is rarely analyzed is the role that sports play. In many cases, Fitzgerald relates sports to characters that have cheated and deceived society. Therefore, sports play a role in which those involved tend to get what they want fraudulently. One example is the encounter Nick has with Mr. Wolfsheim in which Gatsby tells him the truth about the 1919 World Series: "Gatsby hesitated then added coolly: 'He's the man that fixed the World's Series back in 1919." (Fitzgerald 73)
Another example of the importance of sports and their significance in the book is Jordan Baker. Throughout the book she is seen as a ver dishonest character, not only does she constantly lie but as well she cheated on a golf tournament.Sports serve as an example of life and how everything is acceptable in them. It is like in life: you can cheat, you can lie, etc. You are the one that decides how to play it. For example, Gatsby took the decision to change his destiny by becoming a totally different person. Throughout the book the use of sports can be analyzed in many different ways, but the use of this has obviously a hidden symbolism.
